Dr. Avi Yitzhak, the first Ethiopian Israeli doctor, is currently in Haiti taking part in the IDF Rescue Mission, and was involved yesterday in rescuing an earthquake survivor.

Avi made Aliyah from Ethiopia and received an Oleh scholarship to study medicine, with the assistance of Keren Hayesod-UIA donors. He was the first Ethiopian Oleh to graduate from medical school in Israel. He currently serves as a medical officer in the IDF and is a surgeon at Soroka Hospital in Beer Sheva.

You may have seen Avi in one of our videos or as a speaker for KH-UIA.

We spoke with Avi today in the IDF command room in Haiti, via satellite phone, and he told us, "the situation here is very difficult, there are dozens of wounded waiting outside as we speak… the small State of Israel managed to establish within 20 hours the most advanced field hospital in Haiti… there is a huge amount of gratitude for Israel's efforts… I am proud to be a part of this…

It is important that all KH-UIA supporters know that Israel has become a moral force that gives back to the world… in a way, those who supported me through my studies are here today through me, for the victims of this disaster and for Israel."
