Young Israeli Emissaries are idealistic young adults from Israel who volunteer to serve in small Jewish communities around the world, implementing a variety of cultural, educational and social activities for all members of the Jewish community.
These Young Emissaries initiate programs in their host community that are designed to increase Jewish awareness, knowledge and pride; to bridge the gap between Jews of different backgrounds and Israel; to promote an understanding of Israel and its ideals and to integrate Israel-centered Jewish education in different learning venues.
The Young Emissaries serve within a variety of frameworks including informal community education, Jewish schools, synagogues, youth movements, college campuses and community centers. They work with existing organizations and institutions within the community, in an effort to attract more interest and affiliation.
Young Israeli Emissaries represent various streams of Israeli society, and a variety of academic and professional backgrounds. They all share a strong commitment to the Jewish people and knowledge of Jewish history, Judaism and Zionism.
The Young Israeli Emissaries are selected on the basis of proven commitment to Jewish education, the ability to reach out and involve the unaffiliated and a willingness to work with others. The candidates are chosen through a comprehensive screening process, during which the match is made between the specific needs of each community and the skills of the Young Israeli Emissaries.
Each emissary is allocated a program budget from the community, and works with a local volunteer supervisor to formulate a detailed job description. The community and the emissary work together in a dynamic partnership to meet the community’s specific needs. Thus, the program of a young emissary in Australia may be very different from his/her counterpart in South America.
Young Israeli Emissaries are enhancing the connection of Jewish communities to their Jewish heritage and forging strong ties between young Israelis and their Jewish brethren around the world.
