Derech Eretz

PRE-ARMY PROGRAM FOR HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES AT NITZANA

Nitzana

WHY DERECH ERETZ?

The period of time between high school graduation and enlistment in the army is a critical stage for Israeli youth.  The role of pre-army programs is crucial in helping youngsters crystallize life-shaping decisions and forging identities.  To date, however, these programs have been geared to either upper-middle class youth or youth-at-risk.

WHAT IS DERECH ERETZ?

Derech Eretz is a pre-army educational program (mechina) that targets lower- and middle-class youth.  Designed to facilitate social mobility while encouraging involvement, initiative, and volunteerism,  Derech Eretz encourages participants to take responsibility for their lives – helping to make military service more meaningful while laying the groundwork for a life of personal fulfillment, success, and giving to the community.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

  • The six-month program takes place at the Nitzana educational village in the Negev
  • Participants come from all over Israel, and include residents of the periphery, immigrants, and graduates of youth villages
  • They live together as a cohesive group, which is run democratically with decisions made by the youngsters themselves
  • Workshops and lectures are designed to develop skills, broaden horizons, inculcate values, and explore personal, group, and national identity
  • Volunteering in community frameworks is an integral part of the program

HOW IS IT UNIQUE?

It serves a population that has heretofore been underserved - those that are neither the "elite" nor youth-at-risk

WHOM DOES IT HELP?

  • Lower- and middle-class army recruits
  • The Israel Defense Forces
  • The State of Israel

HOW YOU CAN HELP?

I It costs US $3700 to sponsor one participant in the Derech Eretz program.
