In one generation, the percentage of ultra-Orthodox men in Israel who are unemployed has grown from 21% to 65%
With formal education in the haredi sector focusing exclusively on Torah study, youngsters are not taught basic subjects that are prerequisites for higher education
Consequently, Israel’s 700,000–strong haredi community is the country’s poorest sector, with 60% living below the poverty line
WHAT IS HALAMISH?
Halamish includes a 15-month pre-engineering preparatory program that provides intensive instruction in English, advanced math, physics, and computers.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The preparatory program enables participants to catch up on 12 years of study
They receive living stipends and other benefits for the duration of the program
Participants proceed to study at various higher education framework
Graduates integrate into Israel's workforce as civil, mechanical, chemical, electrical and computer engineers
WHAT MAKES HALAMISH UNIQUE?
- Halamish gives talented young haredi men the opportunity to obtain an undergraduate engineering degree at schools such as Ben Gurion University of the Negev, the Technion, Hadassah College of Engineering, and the Jerusalem College of Technology

- It is breaking down barriers and giving motivated ultra-Orthodox men the chance to contribute to Israel's economic growth
- It offers a Military Academic Reserves program that combines military or national service with an undergraduate education
