Aliyah and Absorption of Ethiopian Jews

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY FOR ETHIOPIAN IMMIGRANTS

Ethiopian aliyah

WHAT IS ETHIOPIAN ALIYAH?

In January 2005, the Israeli government made a decision to bring the Falash Mura - descendants of Ethiopian Jews who converted to Christianity under duress – to Israel. Some 5,500 Falash Mura currently live in absorption centers throughout Israel  and an additional 5,900 are expected to immigrate over the next two years.

WHY ETHIOPIAN ALIYAH?

  • To enable the immigrants to fulfill their lifelong dream of returning to Zion
  • To make possible reunification with family who have already immigrated to Israel
  • So they can contribute their talents and skills to the State of Israel

HOW DOES THE PROGRAM WORK?

  • The Jewish Agency operates a facility in Gondar that prepares prospective olim for aliyah pending final approval of their applications
  • Programs include teaching basic Judaism and Hebrew, improving literacy,   providing instruction in health and hygiene, teaching about rights and responsibilities as Israeli citizens, etc.
  • Upon approval of their aliyah, the new immigrants are flown to Israel on special flights
  • They are brought to absorption centers, where all their basic needs are tended to for a period of two years
  • Programs to help foster successful integration into Israeli society include Hebrew language ulpan, projects to bridge educational and cultural gaps, employment training and more
  • Special initiatives to empower the Ethiopian immigrant community and help them overcome the challenges stemming from relocation include educational villages for youth-at-risk and higher education scholarships

HOW IS IT UNIQUE?

  • It helps to ease the transition from  an agrarian, patriarchal society with well-defined family and gender roles to a fast-paced, urban, industrialized culture
  • It addresses the specific problems plaguing the Ethiopian community, including economic deprivation, and high rates of dropping out of school, unemployment, and crime

WHOM DOES IT HELP?

  • Ten thousands of Ethiopian immigrants every year
  • Israeli society
