Creating a Permanent Exhibit at the S.Y. Agnon House

PRESERVING THE LEGACY OF ISRAEL’S GREATEST WRITER

WHAT IS THE S.Y. AGNON  HOUSE?

The simple house in the Old Talpiyot neighborhood of Jerusalem where Nobel Prize laureate, author S.Y. Agnon, lived is a national landmark.  Literary evenings and lectures, cultural events, guided tours, and other programs are held here.

WHY THE S.Y. AGNON  HOUSE?

The house, where Israel’s greatest modern writer lived and created for almost 40 years, serves as a backdrop for the encounter with S.Y. Agnon’s character, his fascinating life story, and his rich literary works. Over the past four years, the Government of Israel has invested US$ 1,000,000 in the preservation of the historic house.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

  • The permanent exhibit will introduce the visitor to Agnon’s literary creations.
  • Starting with a brief introductory movie, it will include archival photographs, documents, recordings made by the writer, letters, manuscripts, and copies of special editions of his works.

HOW IS IT UNIQUE?

  • The historic building contains the original furniture and personal effects of the writer.
  • It also houses Agnon’s 8,000-volume library, including many rare books

HOW DOES IT HELP?

It provides insight into the life and legacy of Israel’s greatest writer, whose unique style influenced generations of writers and who contributed to the renewal of the Hebrew language
