WHY AYALIM?

Residents of the Negev and the Galilee, among them large numbers of disadvantaged populations, are cut off from the economic, cultural, and educational opportunities that are available in the center of the country. The growing socio-economic gap between the residents of the periphery and the center of the country poses serious threats to Israel's future.  

WHAT IS AYALIM?

The Ayalim movement promotes the physical and social development of the Negev and the Galilee, regions declared by the State of Israel as National Priority Areas.   

HOW DOES IT WORK?

  • Student volunteers in twelve Ayalim villages in the Negev and the Galilee contribute 500 hours of community service a year annually in return for housing and academic scholarships
  • They work with children, youth, new immigrants, and other vulnerable populations in distressed towns and inner cities
  • Utilizing their skills and areas of expertise, They they tailor their work to the specific needs of the community
  • They initiate social, cultural, and educational projects: renovating buildings and cleaning bomb shelters;  running enrichment centers and providing tutoring and assistance with  homework;  giving lessons in various subjects; and much more   

WHAT MAKES AYALIM UNIQUE?

  • Volunteers serve as agents of change, empowering the residents, beautifying the community, and enhancing the level of services
  • The project has led to demographic change and the migration of stronger populations to the periphery
  • Many Ayalim graduates settle permanently in the Negev and the Galilee, where they continue their community building and social activism 

WHOM DOES IT HELP?

  • 20,000 people in the periphery, primarily children and youth  

HOW YOU CAN HELP

It costs $125,000 to support the activities of one Ayalim student village for one year.
