Our Youth Villages Help Students Build Better Futures

Beylin Avera’s life transformed thanks to the support and interventions provided by the Ben Yakir Youth Village. He went from being an at-risk youth to enlisting in the Israel Defense Forces as a paratrooper, one of the hardest positions to be accepted to in the army.

He was released earlier this month and shared some remarks on his journey from being a Youth Village student to one of Israel’s top soldiers:

I was mischievous and a troublemaker before I got to Ben Yakir.

Over the years and thanks to some great and special people who believed in me and helped me believe in myself, I began to chase my dreams.

One of those dreams was to serve in the paratroopers brigade.

Before coming to the Youth Village, I never believed that I could achieve this goal. Ben Yakir taught me that I could fulfill my dreams if I had the determination to do so.

Ben Yakir was a nurturing, transformative place for me.

After graduating high school and the Village, I enrolled in a pre-army academy (mechinah). I then jumped into the deep end and joined the army as a paratrooper.

I have never been happier than the day I was accepted into the paratroopers brigade.

Serving in the IDF isn’t always easy. There are ups and downs. But through it all, thanks to the Youth Village, I knew I was always supported and had where to turn to if I needed help.

I was released from my service with an emotional ceremony. I had a heavy heart that day.

I am very proud to have had a meaningful service and to have been a combat soldier. There are, of course, moments I am proud of that I can’t share with you.

I am proud of the process I have gone through and where I am today after all the hard work I have put in.

I want to thank everyone that supported me on my journey.

Beylin will continue to serve as part of the IDF’s reserve forces.

Upon his release, Beylin revisited his former teachers at the Youth Village. Their commitment to Beylin and his peers helps them change the course of their lives. Together, we are helping them build better lives and a better Israeli society.
