The Fast of Tisha B’Av

Tisha B’Av, a national day of mourning, commemorates the destruction of the First and the Second Temples in Jerusalem

The 9th day of the Hebrew month of Av is observed by Jews in Israel and around the world as a day of mourning, marking the destruction of the First Temple in the 6th century B.C.E. and of the Second Temple in 70 C.E. It also marks a number of other tragedies that befell the Jewish people, including the expulsion of the Jews from England and then two centuries later from Spain.

Observed this year on the evening of Saturday, July 17 and Sunday, July 18 during the day, it is traditional to read the Biblical Book of Lamentations and to sit on the ground, in remembrance of the destruction and calamities that the Jewish people experienced on this date.
